Adult Education Opportunities
Girl Scouts of Crooked Tree offers all of its volunteers the opportunity to participate in training for their specific position. Pre-registration is required for all trainings. D ecide which training course you wish to attend. Consult our Council Calendar for the most updated information. To register for training, telephone our Girl Scout Service Center 947-7354 or 1-800-968-5030 and give your name, address, telephone number, course name and location, and age level of girls with whom you are working. The specific site and time for the training will be available when you phone. We do not provide any type of childcare during training.
Please telephone our Service Center to cancel if you cannot attend training. Some courses have waiting lists of other individuals who would like to attend
The minimum number of participants must be registered at least one week in advance or the course will be canceled. If a training is canceled, you will be notified.
Volunteer trainers are willing to offer additional courses. Courses need to be requested by Service Area Managers. A minimum number of participants set by the Trainer must be guaranteed.
We charge no fees for training unless noted in the course description or when you call to register.
Patches are available for you to purchase after you have completed specific training. There are four segments representing the following areas: Leadership, Outdoor, Program, and Enrichment. Cost for each segment is $1.00.

| Training Courses Offered: |
Introduction to Girl Scouting : is a pre-requisite for new Girl Scout Leaders attending Orientation I and II training. A Service Area Manager, Field Director or other local consultant teaches this course. Learn how to get a troop started, what to do at a first meeting, and discover some of the program resources available to volunteers.
Orientation I : is designed for new Troop Leaders, Co-Leaders, and Assistant Leaders. This training introduces the Leader to Girl Scout program fundamentals, pluralism, listening skills, behavior management, and program activities. Policies and standards on money-raising, troop trips, and emergency procedures established by our Council and Safety-Wise are explained.
Orientation II : is designed for new Troop Leaders, Co-Leaders, Assistant Leaders, and Leaders of bridging troops. The Leader becomes acquainted with appropriate troop management, program, recognition, and insignia for the troop's specific age level. The focus is on the Girl Scout program, the five parts of a meeting, adult/girl partnership in planning, troop government, and most of all how to have FUN as Girl Scouts.
Outdoor I : training prepares Leaders to take girls on a hike, have a cookout, and "cabin camping" (Girl Scout cabins and buildings). It covers planning, safety procedures, progression in the outdoors, knots, compass, fire building, and outdoor activity ideas. Stress is put on Leave No Trace camping. The Council camping manual, Follow Winding Paths is available for $6.00 (optional). A minimum of 8 participants is required for this training.
Outdoor II : training consists of one preparatory session with a one-night campout. Volunteers learn to take their troop tent camping at an established site (platform tents, and other types). The course provides progression in basic camping skills, Leave No Trace principles, planning with girls, campout activity ideas, and hands-on experience with fire building, outdoor cooking, tent pitching, knots and compass.
Outdoor I is a pre-requisite. A minimal cost exists for food. Fifteen participants are required to hold this training.
Outdoor III (Backpacking) : provides a beginning backpacking adventure of Leave No Trace camping with minimal equipment. (If you can shop all afternoon and carry two grocery bags, you can do this!) Progression, backpack living and loading, map and compass, gear selection, and being prepared are covered. Equipment is available to borrow. Outdoor I and Outdoor II are pre-requisites for this course. A minimal cost for food exists.
Outdoor IV (Winter Camping) : prepares Leaders to take girls on a winter day event/overnight. Much attention is given to staying warm and dry in the out-of-doors during a 24-hour period-learning what to take and how to use it. Participants try snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, gain winter outdoor activity ideas, and learn winter survival skills. An optional overnight in a snow shelter or tent is offered. Outdoor I and II are pre-requisites.

Basic Canoe : training offers instruction on launching, carrying, entering, paddling and maneuvering a canoe in a small lake. No canoe experience is necessary. Outdoor I is a pre-requisite. (This entry-level course does not ready a Leader to teach girls. See Outdoor V-Canoeing.)
Outdoor V-Canoeing : teaches adults to plan and carry out a canoe trip on a small river/lake. Participants learn to load, launch, paddle, and carry a canoe. Trainers teach Leaders to evaluate troop readiness for potential rivers and lakes in the area. Participants actually spend an overnight on a local river! Outdoor I and II are pre-requisites.
Map and Compass : training differentiates between orienteering, geocaching and letterboxing; offers instruction on how to set and follow a compass trail; and explains symbols and use of topographic maps. Learn map and compass games to use with girls. Outdoor I is a pre-requisite . A minimal materials fee exists.

Outdoor Cooking-Beyond the Hotdog :
offers Leaders new outdoor cooking techniques to use with girls. Learn to bake a cake in an orange shell or cook bacon and eggs in a paper bag. Cook a favorite casserole in a "Box Oven". Come join the fun by spending the day trying new recipes and cooking in a variety of unique ways. Outdoor I is a pre-requisite. A minimal cost exists for food.
Lifeguard :
training provides strong intermediate swimmers with the certification needed to take a troop swimming in a pool, lake or river. This training is also required for canoeing/rafting trips. Current CPR and First Aid certification is a pre-requisite. First Aid/CPR :
training is o ffered several times in various areas throughout the Council by our own Council Trainers. Training certifies the adult to meet the requirements in Safety-Wise . The course is taught in one all-day session or in two evening sessions. The first session covers CPR, (Red Cross certifies for 1 year/American Heart certifies for 2 years), while the second session is First Aid (Red Cross certifies for 3 years/American Heart for 2 years). Both sessions must be attended for first time certification. Cost varies by each Red Cross or American Heart Chapter. CPR Challenge Course :
is available for volunteers who have taken American Red Cross CPR and hold a current certification. A written and skills test is issued. Cost varies by each Red Cross Chapter. Songs I, II, & III trainings teach traditional and new songs. Three levels of this training are available. Bring a tape player for recording. Games I, II, & III :
trainings offer non-competitive games to teach your troop. Three levels of this training are available. Dress comfortably as this is an interactive training. Ceremonies :
workshop offers participants the opportunity to actively learn a variety of ceremonies-Investiture, Flag, Court of Awards, Thinking Day, World Trefoil Pin, Scout's Own, etc. Make It & Take It :
workshops offer h ours of fun. Learn to make crafts with items found in your home. The instructor has a "storehouse" of ideas to share! Minimal fee and/or supply list exists. Service Area Manager (SAM) Training/Conference :
provides new and experienced Service Area Managers with the opportunity to gain information on new policies and procedures, recruitment, Leader orientation, and problem solving. Returning SAMs share "words of wisdom" with those who are new. All Service Area Managers are encouraged to attend these trainings as the newest information from Crooked Tree and GSUSA is presented.
