Girl Scouts of Crooked Tree works with many horseback riding stables within our 11-county jurisdiction to ensure that Girl Scouts have an exciting and safe experience. Many stables will work in conjunction with your troop on a specific badge or interest patch. By following Crooked Tree's and GSUSA's policies, horseback riding can be one of a troop's more memorable experiences. (Please note that prior to riding, parents should sign the waiver if required by a stable. Most stables will fax a copy of their waiver upon request.)
Plan ahead:
Horseback riding is considered a high-risk activity. Please refer to Safety-Wise (page 102-104).
Select a Girl Scout approved stable. Girl Scout insurance is not valid at non-approved stables. Click Approved Horse Stables .
One month prior to your trip, please send the following information to our Girl Scout Service Center:
Completed Troop Trip Application with SAM approval (if outside the Troop's school district boundaries).
Completed Liability Insurance for Horses form and Horseback Helmet Request. Click Horseback Riding .
Approved horseback riding helmets must be worn whenever a person is on or near a horse with no barrier (i.e. fence) between them and the horse.
Two weeks prior to your trip:
Telephone our Service Center to purchase non-member insurance for any participants/drivers/tag a-alongs who are not registered Girl Scouts.
On the day your Troop rides, obtain from each parent/guardian a signed:
Troop Activity Parent/Guardian Permission Form.
Signed waiver if required by the stable.
