Volunteers
are key at Girl Scouts of Crooked Tree. They are the
spirit that drives the Council, work on a day-to-day
basis with 4,000 girls, and ensure that Girl Scouting
is an organization where girls grow strong.
Painting
a picture of a “typical” Crooked
Tree volunteer is not always as easy as it seems. Although
the bulk of our volunteers are mothers of school-age
girls, a more nontraditional group of volunteers is
emerging—single
women, men, and retired individuals.
Crooked Tree has
a host of volunteer opportunities designed to appeal
to a wide range of interests and time commitments.
If being a troop leader is not your volunteer style,
long and short-term positions exist as a Committee Member,
an Event Director, or a Trainer. An extra set of hands
is always welcomed at one of our four Council camps.
Positions on the Board of Directors and Nominating Committee
are available yearly.
Every adult volunteer in Girl Scouting
must subscribe to the Girl Scout Promise and Law and
register with Girl Scouts of the USA. Adult volunteers
are selected on the basis of qualification for membership,
ability to perform the job, and willingness and availability
to participate in training.
“In selection of adults,
there shall be no discrimination against an otherwise
qualified adult volunteer by reason of handicap or disability
or on the basis of age. Furthermore, there shall be no
discrimination on the basis of race, color, ethnicity,
sex, creed, religion, national origin, marital status,
height, weight, or socioeconomic status. In addition,
to ensure full equality of opportunity in all operations
and activities of the organization, affirmative action
policies and procedures shall be utilized in the recruitment,
selection, training, placement, and recognition of volunteers.” (Girl
Scouts of Crooked Tree Council Handbook)
In order
to ensure that both the volunteer and our Council at
large are best served, each volunteer position has a
written position description that defines specific responsibilities
and schedules, clarifies expectations, and, in conjunction
with performance goals, forms the basis for assessment
of volunteer performance, reappointment, rotation to
another position, and/or separation. Each volunteer must
complete a volunteer application and provide three confidential
